What does it cost to be a disciple of Christ? How many people have never really stopped to count the cost? It is both less than we could hope for and more than we could ever imagine! Coming to Christ is free … following Christ will cost you everything!

Screwtape Letters Discussion (Letter 31)

Letter number thirty one could perhaps be titled “The One That Got Away”

  • What does the entrance into the heavenly afterlife look like from the vantage point of the devil?
  • What does it look like from the vantage point of those here on earth?
  • What is it like from the view point of heaven?

Screwtape Letters Discussion (Letter 30)

Letter number thirty could perhaps be titled “What is Real?”

  • Why might moderate fatigue be better soil for sin than absolute exhaustion? (paragraph 2)
  • How does the devil use the idea of “real” to his advantage? (par. 4) How does emotion and/or the intellect play into this?
  • The use of the word “real” Screwtape says, is in its emotional value – first placed on one side of the account, then on the other. What examples does he use?  What others can you think of? (par. 4)
  • How is it that we so often “pay for the cake and not eat it”? (par. 4)

Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints – so says our verse for today. Are you kidding!?! John’s death seems so tragic, so wasteful … how can we call his death – or anyone’s death – precious? By Looking past it to what lies beyond!

Screwtape Letters Discussion (Letter 29)

Letter number twenty nine could perhaps be titled “Cowardice”

  • Why would Screwtape say that “to be greatly and effectively wicked a man needs some virtue”? (paragraph 2)  What does this (and the fact that the devil cannot create such virtues) tell us about the nature of evil?
  • Why is “cowardice, alone of all the vices, purely painful” (par. 3)  Why is courage “not simply one of the virtues, but the form of every virtue at the testing point”? (par. 5)
  • What do you think, did God, as Screwtape contends, create a dangerous world?   Or does He simply put it to His good uses? (par. 5) Give your reasons.
  • Do we ever really have anything we can truly fall back on, other than God (and His Son Jesus Christ)? (par. 7)
